I’m not here to shame anyone’s style choices, but if there’s one thing you need to learn about fashion is that certain looks can accidentally send the wrong message about who we are. And honestly? We’re all too fabulous to let our clothes undersell us!
These are common outfits mistakes that you should avoid:
1. Super Short Outfits:
Look, I love showing off my legs as much as the next person, but there’s definitely a sweet spot when it comes to hemlines. Wearing outfits that are excessively short can send the wrong message especially if it’s not appropriate for the event.
Here’s my foolproof test: when you’re standing with your arms relaxed at your sides, your hemline shouldn’t be shorter than where your fingertips end. This little trick has saved me from so many awkward moments! It’s not about being conservative, it’s about looking intentional and put-together.
2. Showing Too Much Skin:
I’m absolutely not here to police anyone’s body or tell you to cover up, but showing a lot of skin in multiple places at once, tends to make an outfit look less polished, tacky and lacking class. It’s like when you’re decorating a room, sometimes less really is more.
My personal rule is to pick one area to highlight and keep the rest more covered. If you’re going to go for a low-cut top then pair it with high-waisted pants or a longer skirt.
3. Fabric Choices That Work Against You
You should runaway from fabrics that are prone to wrinkles, those super casual fabrics like jersey, basic cotton, or thin denim can sometimes make even a well-fitting outfit look a bit sloppy.
Instead, gravitate towards fabrics that hold their shape better like structured cotton, ponte knits, or anything with a bit of weight to it. These fabrics just seem to photograph better and move with you in a more elegant way.
4. Heavy-Logo Overload:
Oh honey! Wearing outfits with big, obvious logos can actually make you look cheap and give off the impression that you’re trying too hard or worse wearing knockoffs (even when you’re not!).
Instead choose pieces from brands that are all about “subtle luxury”. Theses outfits are clearly well-made but don’t scream their brand name from across the room.
5. Overly Tight Clothes:
Clothes that are too tight can actually make you look less polished, no matter how expensive they are.
The key is finding that perfect fit where your clothes skim your body without clinging to every curve or creating weird pulling situations. When your clothes fit properly, you not just move differently but you feel more confident. Plus, well-fitted (not tight!) clothes photograph so much better.
6. Sequin and Glitter Overload
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love a good sparkle moment but wearing head-to-toe sequins or glitter during the day can sometimes look a bit excessive rather than chic.
Save the major sparkle for special occasions, and when you do wear it, keep everything else simple. A sequined top with simple black pants? Gorgeous. A glittery skirt with a classic white blouse? Perfect. A sequined dress? Beautiful. Mixing and matching two or more outfit covered in sparkles? Maybe save that for NEVER!
7. Chasing Every Single Trend
The most stylish people I know have their own signature style and only incorporate trends that actually work with their aesthetic.
Some trends are amazing, but wearing every single one just makes you look like you’re desperately trying to keep up and fit in with the crowd rather than confidently setting your own pace.
Small Changes, Big Impact
The goal isn’t to trick people into thinking you spent a fortune on your outfit. The goal is to look so effortlessly stylish that people wonder where you learned to put things together so well!
At the end of the day, fashion should make you feel amazing, not stressed out about following a bunch of arbitrary rules. These guidelines are just tools to help you look more polished if that’s what you’re going for.
