YouTube Rolls Out New Comment Filters, Highlights for Livestreams

Managing comments on a successful YouTube channel can feel like trying to drink from a fire hose. Between genuine questions, spam, trolls, and that one person who always asks questions you answered five minutes earlier, staying on top of engagement can become overwhelming rather than rewarding.

YouTube’s new comment filtering system addresses this head-on. YouTube’s looking to make it easier to manage your channel engagement by enabling creators to filter video responses based on the latest replies, with “New replies to your response”, and the option to sort comments by “Newest,” ensuring that you can stay on top of the latest discussions inspired by your clips.

This might sound like a small update, but think about the impact: instead of scrolling endlessly through comments hoping you didn’t miss someone’s follow-up question, you can now see exactly which conversations are continuing after you’ve engaged.

You can use the new reply filter options in combination with other response filters to further refine your search, while you can also now save these as default filters on the mobile version of YouTube Studio. For creators who manage their channels primarily from mobile devices, this represents a significant quality-of-life improvement.

Mobile Management Gets An Upgrade

Speaking of mobile management, YouTube has finally brought desktop functionality to mobile users. Up until now, creators could save default filters on Studio Desktop, but this didn’t exist on Studio Mobile. We’re happy to share that we’re launching this so you can pick your preferred default view of comments throughout Studio.

This update recognizes how modern content creators actually work. Many creators are constantly on the go, responding to comments during commutes, between meetings, or while traveling. Having the same powerful filtering capabilities available on mobile as on desktop means you can maintain consistent community engagement regardless of where you are or what device you’re using.

But the real sweet feature here might be YouTube’s new automated highlight system for livestreams. YouTube’s also rolling out its new automated Shorts creation process for livestreams, which will select segments from your live broadcasts for potential Shorts clips.

Imagine you finish a three-hour livestream where you covered everything from your morning routine to a cooking tutorial to an impromptu Q&A session. Traditionally, you’d need to watch back through the entire stream, identify the best moments, manually clip them, edit them for the Shorts format, and then publish them separately. That’s hours of additional work after you’ve already spent hours creating live content.

Now, after completing your livestream, YouTube will automatically extract a selection of highlights, which you’ll then be able to publish as Shorts, if you choose, to help promote your streams. The AI identifies moments that have the potential to perform well as short-form content, essentially giving you a head start on repurposing your live content.

This automated highlight feature addresses one of the biggest challenges in modern content creation: the need to create content for multiple formats and audiences simultaneously. Live streaming audiences and Shorts audiences often have different preferences and consumption habits, but until now, bridging that gap required significant additional effort.

This feature will be available in the mobile app, and you can preview the short video in the recap screen upon ending the stream. We hope this enhances productivity in sharing stream highlights through short-form content.

The workflow becomes beautifully streamlined: create your live content, review AI-suggested highlights immediately after your stream ends, and publish the best clips to reach new audiences. It’s like having an editor who works for free and never sleeps.
