Anna Wintour, the iconic editor-in-chief of Vogue, has officially announced her decision to step down after an impressive 37-year tenure. While she will no longer hold the editorial reins, Wintour will continue her influential role as Condé Nast’s global editorial director, ensuring her legacy in the fashion world endures.
On June 26, 2025, Anna Wintour informed her staff that she would be stepping down as the editor-in-chief of American Vogue. This decision marks the end of an era for the magazine, which she has led since November 1988.
Although Wintour is relinquishing her top position, she will not be leaving Vogue or Condé Nast entirely. She will remain as the global editorial director of Vogue and continue her role as Condé Nast’s global chief content officer. This shift is part of a broader restructuring within the company, aimed at adapting to the evolving media landscape.
Wintour’s tenure at Vogue is characterized by her bold editorial choices and a willingness to challenge the status quo. She transformed the magazine into a trendsetting powerhouse, known for its daring covers and innovative content. Notably, her first issue featured Israeli model Michaela Bercu in jeans, a groundbreaking choice that set the tone for future issues.
The position that will replace Wintour as the head of American Vogue will be titled “head of editorial content.” This new role signifies a shift in focus, allowing for fresh perspectives and ideas to shape the magazine’s future.
