YouTube Adds New AI Remix Feature to Its Shorts

YouTube introduced Reimagine, a new tool that gives everyone the ability to transform a single frame from an existing YouTube Short into an entirely new 8-second clip. Powered by Veo, Reimagine puts a new spin on remixing. With just a few taps, viewers can insert themselves or objects into any eligible Short using up to two references from their photo gallery. Using either Gemini-suggested or custom-generated text prompts, Reimagine creates a high-quality video with audio, turning ideas into realities in no time.

How It Works in Practice

Now, at the bottom of a YouTube Short, when you click the remix icon, you will see an option to reimagine it. Here, you can prompt Gemini to turn a video into pixel art, an anime, or a found-footage horror film. Beyond that, you can also alter the contents by inflating heads, inserting background actors, or dressing people in costumes.

The technology powering all of this is significant. The technology comes from Gemini Omni, Google’s multimodal AI model announced at Google I/O 2026, which can understand and generate content across text, images, audio, and video formats. The fact that audio is included in the generated output not just visuals makes this considerably more sophisticated than most AI video tools currently available to everyday users.
