Three billion people have been using Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for free for years. Well, not truly free because their attention and data have always been the currency powering Meta’s advertising engine. But free in the sense that nobody handed over a credit card to scroll their feed, post their Stories, or message their friends. That era is not ending but it is officially being joined by something new. On May 27, 2026, Meta adds a subscription plan to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp simultaneously and the social media landscape just shifted in a direction that will define the next decade of how platforms make money.
Meta is now rolling out its consumer subscription plans globally for its flagship apps Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and beginning tests of new subscriptions for businesses, creators, and Meta AI users.
The three new consumer subscription tiers are available separately, Instagram Plus at $3.99 per month, Facebook Plus at $3.99 per month, and WhatsApp Plus at $2.99 per month.
Meta head of product Naomi Gleit announced the move in a video posted to Instagram, with more plans in the works for businesses, creators, and artificial intelligence products.
What You Get With Each Subscription
Instagram Plus
The Instagram Plus plan gives subscribers access to extra features including the ability to see how many people have rewatched your Story in aggregate, as well as the ability to create unlimited audience lists for Stories beyond the Close Friends option.
Subscribers also gain access to customizable themes, super reactions, and the ability to extend Stories beyond 24 hours.
Facebook Plus
Facebook Plus focuses on social expression and enhanced analytics. Features include profile customization, super reactions, and story insights among other things. The platform is positioning this tier for power users who want deeper visibility into their content performance and more expressive tools within the app.
WhatsApp Plus
WhatsApp Plus focuses on personalization and messaging, with the new plan tailored specifically to the app’s communication-first identity. Premium chat themes, exclusive customization options, and enhanced messaging tools form the core of what subscribers receive, consistent with the cosmetic premium direction WhatsApp has been testing throughout 2026.
