Grammy Add 5 New Categories Ahead of 2027

The Recording Academy has confirmed that five brand-new categories are being added ahead of the 69th Grammy Awards, which culminate in the 2027 Grammys airing live on ABC, Disney+, and Hulu on February 7, 2027. With this addition, the total number of Grammy categories now climbs to 100.

The five new categories are:

– Best Asian Pop Music Performance

– Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance

– Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance

– Best Traditional Folk Album

– Best Latin Song

Each one fills a gap that artists, fans, and industry insiders have been pointing to for a while now.

Why These Specific Categories Were Added

The reasoning behind each new category tells its own story about where music is heading globally.

Best Asian Pop Music Performance recognizes the explosive global reach of K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, finally giving Asian pop artists a dedicated space at one of music’s biggest stages.

Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance acknowledges how often R&B artists now create as duos, groups, or in collaboration with others, something the previous single performance category didn’t fully capture.

Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance brings recognition back to classic-style vocal pop, separating it from the more contemporary pop sound dominating today’s charts.

Best Traditional Folk Album honors purely traditional folk recordings, distinct from the newly renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album category.

Best Latin Song gives Latin songwriters their own dedicated songwriting award, a long-overdue addition given how influential Latin music has become worldwide.

Here’s why this expansion genuinely matters:

– It gives underrepresented genres a real shot at recognition instead of being lumped into broader categories

– It reflects how global the music industry has become, especially with the rise of Asian pop and Latin music

– It creates more opportunities for songwriters specifically, not just performers

– It shows award shows can evolve alongside listener habits instead of lagging years behind

Other Notable Changes Worth Knowing

Beyond the new categories, a few rule changes are rolling out alongside them. Best New Artist eligibility has loosened, allowing artists to be entered up to four times instead of three before becoming ineligible. The threshold for new recordings required on an eligible album has also been lowered from 75 percent to 66 percent, giving more flexibility to how albums qualify.

Songwriters and composers are getting more recognition too, now receiving statuettes in parity with producers and engineers on most genre album wins.
