Meta announced the launch of Instants, a new image sharing option on Instagram. Instants are ephemeral photos that disappear from Instagram after they are viewed by a user’s friends or after a 24-hour period. Reactions and replies to Instants images show up in DMs instead of on the post.
The defining characteristic that sets Instants apart from everything else currently on Instagram is the complete removal of editing. Instants removes editing entirely. Users cannot upload images from their camera roll, apply filters, or retouch photos. Instead the feature opens directly into the camera for instant sharing.
No retakes from your gallery. No filter shopping. No wondering if the lighting is right. You open the camera, you take the photo, and it goes.
The Standalone App
One of the most interesting aspects of how meta launches its new Instants app is the decision to release it as both an Instagram feature and a separate downloadable application simultaneously.
Meta describes Instants as primarily a new feature inside Instagram. However, it says that early testers wanted a faster way to use Instants. For that reason it is experimenting with a standalone app. The app gives you immediate access to the camera — just log in with your existing Instagram account. Instants you share on the separate app will show up for friends on Instagram and vice versa.
Opening directly to capture changes the psychological experience. It can make a product feel more immediate, more intimate, and less tied to the rest of Instagram’s crowded interface. That psychological shift is not a minor design detail — it is the entire point of a camera-first app. The moment you open it, you are already in capture mode. There is no feed to scroll, no notifications to distract, no other content competing for your attention before you share something.
How to Use Instants Right Now
Inside Instagram
Instants live in the bottom right corner of your Instagram inbox. With a simple tap of the camera, you can share photos with close friends or mutuals followers you follow back. No edits, no pressure, just life as it happens.
Through the Standalone App
On the app, users only need to log in using their existing Instagram account. The app opens immediately to the camera, ready to capture and share without navigating through a larger platform interface.
